To avoid damage or loss we recommend that all shipments be skidded (palletized) and shrink-wrapped. This page should explain general conditions for shipping palletized and non-palletized cargo.
Palletizing service will be provided upon request when booking your shipment. We make every effort to provide the service as ordered. However there are EXCLUSIONS that may occur:
-
Some freight terminals will not accept loose cartons. If there are more than 4-6 cartons or any one piece exceeds 100 lbs then most likely the cargo will be palletized anyway, no matter if palletizing service had been requested or not. Consigner must be aware of possible extra-volume charges due to palletizing.
-
Wood-packing restrictions and anti-pest measures at origin and destination country CFS may prohibit providing palletizing for certain shipments. If skids received by a freight terminal will not comply with origin or destination requirements then skids may be broken down. De-palletizing charges may occur, which are, as a rule, equal to palletizing charges.
Due to the exclusions above, certain shipments may not be shipped on skids as requested. Consigner will receive a confirmation of the conditions in the final invoice.
Palletized cargo dimensions are derived by the length, width and highest point of the pallet (including the pallet itself). The standard size of a U.S. wood pallet (also known as a "skid"):
- Length 48" (1.2m) - Width 40" (1.0m) - Height 6" (0.15m)
Palletizing may increase chargeable volume 10% - 30% and more. However palletized cargo has a much higher probability to reach the destination safely without damage or loss.
PICKUP SERVICE + PALLETIZING: If you are selecting palletizing along with our pickup service the cargo will be accepted by our driver as loose cartons and then palletized before transfer to the steamship line CFS (Container Freight Station or shipping terminal).
SELF-DELIVERED CARGO: If you deliver cargo to the origin CFS, then you most likely will be asked to pay charges for palletizing directly at the CFS. Ensure a receipt is obtained. GUIDELINES TO REDUCE ADDITIONAL VOLUME, DAMAGE & LOSS:
- Align pieces to fit within the edges of a pallet.
- Place the strongest and heaviest boxes on the bottom.
- Any one piece that exceeds 100 lbs MUST be palletized.
- Use shipment pieces which are similar in size on each row.
- Cartons that overhang the edges of the pallet are likely to be damaged.
- Boxes of minimum strength 150 LB TEST are recommended and can be purchased from any shipping retail center, Sams Club, Costco or Office Supply store. Box strength indicator is stamped on bottom of all boxes in a black circle.
- Boxes, packing tape and other shipping supplies can be purchased on-line via PACKING section of the web-site at no extra cost for the delivery using ground shipping service.
